PreK Parents Connect Through Breakfast and Basketball

On Friday, March 7, students and dads came together to celebrate PreK Slam Dunk with Dads. PreK teacher Carrie Ruppert said, “We take two special times a year to celebrate parents— one, we celebrate moms, and this one specifically is to celebrate dads.”

The event took place in the afternoon, starting with lunch in the Student Life Center. “The children work on special crafts to give dads, as well as a couple of songs to sing. Then we prepare a special lunch and invite the dads in, and they get to spend a special time with their child or their children as they spend the afternoon together,” Ruppert said.

The schedule was filled with a variety of activities. Ruppert explained, “They did a couple of different crafts. They did a painting of a basketball with lots of fingerprints. We also like doing surveys for parents. This is always fun to see what the children will say when you ask questions like, ‘How old is Dad?’, ‘What is Dad's job?’, ‘What does he do when you're at school?’, ‘What do you call Daddy?’, ‘What's his favorite food?’ and ‘What's your favorite thing to do with Daddy?’ So, things like that.”

The PreK teachers, Mrs. Ruppert and Mrs. Jennifer Einhorn, have been continuing the traditions of parent events since the program first started over ten years ago. Ruppert said, “The program has been around for several years, actually beyond me. I have been here for almost 10 years, but [the parent events] have been here beyond me and have been happening ever since the program started.”

Mothers are celebrated during the PreK Valentine’s event. “The moms came in the morning with their children and had a little light breakfast with the kids,” Ruppert said. “The crafts that the children made for that was a little jewelry dish and then a fingerprint necklace for the moms. They had a survey as well, which the moms appreciate.” Each student also drew a picture of Mom “for her to see what she looks like in their eyes,” Ruppert shared.

Along with these two events, the preschool parents also have the opportunity to attend a performance. Ruppert said, “We focus on moms in February and dads in March, but we will have our end-of-the-year program where the children are able to perform on stage and show their parents a little sample of what they learned through the year.”
