Merriam-Webster defines citizenship as “the qualities that a person is expected to have as a responsible member of a community”. Digital Citizenship, then, may refer to the qualities that a person is expected to have as a responsible member of a digital community. At NRCA, we seek to educate students to become productive, responsible citizens in the digital world by encouraging them to think critically, behave appropriately, evaluate sources responsibly, and protect themselves from possible threats that may exist in a digital society. In an effort to start the year off right, September is known as Digital Citizenship Month here at NRCA. All students, K-12, will receive weekly lessons on becoming a responsible digital citizen. Common Sense Media provides a nationally recognized K-12 Digital Literacy and Citizenship curriculum presented in an age appropriate way. The lessons cover eight general categories: Internet Safety, Privacy & Security, Relationships & Communication, Cyberbullying, Digital Footprint & Reputation, Self-Image & Identity, Information Literacy, and Creative Credit & Copyright. The lessons are taught by our Bible teachers and integrate Biblical values while leading the student to a better understanding of the moral and spiritual significance of being a good digital citizen. Students in grades 4th through 12th will use the accompanying Common Sense Media iBook Links to each of these books can be found on the Digital Textbooks page. The complete Common Sense Media curriculum can be found here. Additionally, during the month of September, several of the weekly Middle and High School chapels are dedicated to speaking on the attributes of a responsible Christian digital citizen.
