The NRCA junior varsity volleyball team finished out the season conference champs, ending with a 12-0 conference record.
The Knights started off the season strong with wins against Cary Christian, Franklin Academy, and Ravenscroft. The team also participated in a showcase at Garner High School along with the varsity volleyball team where they played and lost to Green Hope and Cardinal Gibbons, the only team that forced the Knights to three sets.
“Our most difficult game of the season was against Cardinal Gibbons. It was challenging for several reasons,” Coach Mitchner explained. “First, Cardinal Gibbons has a reputation for having an outstanding volleyball program. They have a large team with 21 athletes on their JV roster. When they came into our gym, they were quite intimidating in size and number! In addition, many of their athletes are on high–level area club teams; we went into the match intimidated. We learned a great lesson that day, though – keep our eyes focused on our Father in Heaven and not on the other team!” Mitchner said.
This was Mitchner’s first season with the junior varsity volleyball team after previously coaching a year with the middle school team.
“Coaching with coaches Murray and Buckley and having the support of other NRCA staff is truly a blessing. The athletes at NRCA play for a higher purpose, and their attitudes and work ethic make coaching a joy!” Mitchner said.
NRCA finished out conference play with a win against Wake Christian, who they had previously beat earlier in the season.
“My favorite part of this volleyball season was winning conference with the best team and also the friendships I have created through NRCA volleyball!” sophomore captain McClain Varnum said.
