The NRCA Knights competition cheerleading team wrapped up their season by finishing first in the All-Music Varsity division and taking home the overall title of Grand Champions at the FCC Carolina Championship at NRCA on Jan. 27.
In the All-Music Varsity division, the Knights competed against one other team, Westminster Catawba Christian School. This team was also at the national competition in Orlando, where NRCA placed second. Overall, 16 teams performed in the state championship competition. Brooke Young and Bethany Benson were the NRCA coaches.
Recent winter weather limited the amount of preparation the cheerleaders had before States. “I think we performed well this weekend, although [we had] very little practice before this competition. I am proud of how we performed and ended our competition season,” freshman Brianna Brookhart said.
Before the awards ceremony, the event organizers held a jump and tumble jam for the cheerleaders. From NRCA, Caroline Laster won the seventh-grade jump jam, Alexa Gomez won ninth- and tenth-grade Best Tumbling and Brooke Wallace won 11th– and 12th-grade Best Tumbling.
The cheer team competed Saturday morning and by the afternoon they were named All-Music Varsity State Champions and overall Grand Champions.
“The victory was sweet, but Angus Barn will be much sweeter. It was great being able to perform one last time with 31 of my best friends,” senior Kylie O’Brien said.
